Scripting Language in Performance Tools

performance testing | performance testing tools | Visual Studio Team System 2005
Have seen a recording about VisualStudio 2005 Test Edition. Looks like their load testing tool is GUI-based, no scripting language (at least nothing was told about it). If it is this way, Microsoft is still far from being a real danger for major load testing tools. I think that GUI-based tools (like JMeter), while may be good in some cases, are inferior to tools with a good scripting language (like OpenSTA), or, much better, supporting several standard scripting languages that can be easily extended (like LoadRunner or Rational).

Why not give it a try?

Alex,

You can generate code from the recorded test. This is exported in the language that was chosen at the time of creating the project. This means you can choose your preferred language:

VB
C#
J#
C++

This gives you the full power, extensibility and flexibility of the .NET framework and the simplicity of the classes and methods available in the Microsoft.VisualStudio.QualityToolsWebTestFramework namespace.

Why not apply for a copy of beta2 and try it for yourself?

Visual Studio 2005 Team Test Edition VS Mercury Quality Center

I have to give VS Team Test some credit because it is VERY easy to create a web test without a single line of code.

I like how the controls are on the browser you use to record the test, instead of having to wonder over a ton of open windows (which is normally my case).

The unit testing + load testing + web testing tools are definitively something we are currently considering since Mercury's prices are really high.

The part that I don't like is the lack of a nice defect tracking tool, and most importantly: the lack of a decent test manager tool (the one that is built-in right now just doesn't work for me).

Scott,

You should send Microsoft an invoice ;-) I guess their whole marketing team won't be able to create a better advertisement ;-)

Looks like I need to stop listening to webinars, etc. and look at the tool ;-)

Not at all - it is by FAR the best performance testing tool I have ever used. Fully featured in all of the Visual Studio programming languages, far superior functionality to any tool on the market, fully extensible, intuitive AND has a complete performance unit testing framework. Oh, and did I mention that it sells for 1/5 to 1/10 what LoadRunner does?

If I were Mercury, I'd be terrified. Wait until the Q4 market reports come out, Merc is in trouble - serious trouble! Finally there is a tool that has all of the attributes to knock Merc off it's perch as uncontested market leader due to disguesting sales and marketing practices.

It honestly pains me that MS is the one in the position to do it, but even my personal feelings about the anti-competitive nature of MS can't dampen my whole-hearted support for this tool. For a performance tester, it is a dream come true!
