Patterns the microsoft way...

patterns
[textile]The funny thing with Microsoft is that if they are (a) for something, you know that it is probably because they know that it is the next big thing - and they intend to own it... if they are (b)against something, it might be propaganda because it is probably the next big thing, and they can't own it... :-)

"Microsoft's patterns & practices site":http://www.microsoft.com/resources/practices/community.mspx site is definitely in category (a)! It has many useful links to blogs and resources, including some up-coming webinars, like one on "Test Driven Development on July 15th 2004":http://msevents.microsoft.com/CUI/EventDetail.aspx?EventID=1032256315&Culture=en-US.

Their investment in building these resources, combined with their "Solutions Framework":http://www.microsoft.com/technet/itsolutions/techguide/msf/default.mspx with its integrated risk management features, collaborative team-tools and a clear "commitment to facilitating testing in Visual Studio 2005":http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnvsent/html/vsts-test.asp make it clear that they realise the ultimate potential of all of these concepts.

From a commercial point of view, being a thought-leader in this area will obviously bring them attention from the right people.

From my point of view, it is also a good thing... Personally, I am vendor independent (or vendor-agnostic as some call it)... but there are those who only go where Microsoft leads... Microsoft's commitment in this area will help many organisations that have made excuses to avoid testing and risk management in the past actually see it as the cool thing to be doing... and perhaps many will start to understand what testing is really about... but if nothing else it will mean there are a few more Microsoft-centric organisations taking one step closer to building better software...

This is not an endorsement of microsoft's products - I am just bringing these features and information resources to your attention
