SWExplorerAutomation v1.4.1.4 incompatability with MSN Desktop Search

useful utilities | web testing tools
[textile]In a "prior post about SWExplorerAutomation (SWEA)":http://www.testingreflections.com/node/view/2592 I mentioned a problem (and solution) that occurs if you have applied .NET framework patches in the wrong order.

I have also found another incompatibility, specifically with "MSN Desktop Search":http://toolbar.msn.com

If you have the "MSN Desktop Search":http://toolbar.msn.com installed with the Windows Explorer / Internet Explorer search-bar (and tabbed browsing) the SWEA "Scene Editor" shortcut menu in IE doesn't appear. Although this is a minor hinderence since the short-cut keys still work, I wonder if it might impact other features of SWEA? so I have resolved it as follows...

If the MSN Desktop Search has become an indispensible tool for you (as it has for me) removing it isn't an option, however, I mostly use the Deskbar... since I generally don't use IE as my main browser. Uninstalling MSN Desktop Search and reinstalling it without the Windows Explorer / Internet Explorer tool-bar (and tabbed browsing) resolves the issue... although you will have to rebuild your Deskbar index...

Other than that, "SWEA":http://home.comcast.net/~furmana/SWIEAutomation.htm is working well for me... I hope "Alex Furman":http://www.alexfurman.net/, creator of SWEA, considers releasing it as open-source so it can be taken even further!

Nice Work Alex!

True at the time of writing for SWEA v1.4.1.4 and MSN Desktop Search 02.05.0000.1082 on Windows 2000 and Windows Tablet PC Edition 2005 (and thus, probably Windows XP)

Damon, I have fixed the is

Damon,

I have fixed the issue. It was incompatability with one of the latest MS updates, at least I was not able to find another explanation, because there were no changes to the Designer for two months. I can hardly believe that the problem was caused by missing ComVisible attribute. The code worked for two years!.

I had to roll back to the previous version as this was broken

All,

Unfortunately after installing this upgrade I am completely destroyed. For example, a 'Text Selection Mode' option to add HTML Content CRASH! I am fundamentally unable to capture (X)HTML and perform any Xpath or TableDataExtractor operations.

This is a real shame as TOMORROW I am doing a large training class on this tool and I must use the previous version.

Is anyone else having this problem? Just turn on Text Selection Mode and try to add HtmlContent. After that the entire system is unstable.

Can everyone please let me know if I am the only one having this issue? My email is dcarr2@XXXXXX.com (my current consulting assignment) or damon@agilefactor.com (my work email). Please use both if you are going to contact me.

This should have been caught by NUnit regression tests or even the tool validating itself. Alex, do you use your own tools to validate this? I am thinking you must, which is why I am worried this is a unique problem to me. However I am about to install the new version on another PC and see.
