StarWEST was great fun this year, with a fair international contingent, including a few from the UK (the Grovers, etc and Neil Mc, yes it was good to finally catch up). At the start of the conference, Lee asked all the overseas visitors to stand up and there was a surprising number from many countries. The Australian contingent was limited to 3, but strangely enough I knew the other 2 folk, both from the ANZ bank.
While the presentations are all interesting, its the interaction in the breaks and the evenings often inspired by the sessions that add an extra level of interest. It is great to go to a conference as a SME and still learn a lot of new info and expand your knowledge in areas you thought you knew all there was to know.
I must have caught up with at least 50 people I knew already, and met probably a hundred or more. It was nice to be remembered by some "celebrity" folk, but I think that's the great thing about our industry that people make time to speak to newbies, and people leave their egos at the door, and really contribute to a conference culture. The trick now is to keep the momentum going, revise all the talks you attended, go thru the slides for the ones you didn't, and start using the ideas. I was pleased that several people said they were going to use my "testing with styles" ideas.
It was 3 years since my last STARWest, but hopefully only 12 months till my next..!
