New to testing - Information Overload

general software testing
Finally, after a year of pressurising management, the small company I work for is ready to start with some proper test processes and procedures. At the same time there is also a push from the developers to try out an agile approach and use SCRUM for the new projects that are planned to happen. A developer who wants to move into testing could be very very busy....

As I am that developer I've been trying to learn as much as I can about testing. I now have a decent library and can casually namedrop Kaner, Pettichord, Bach, Black, Crispin, Jeffries with the best of them. Found some forums to lurk on and ask the occasional question. Found some groups to join so now I have daily email digests to read. Found some blogs of people out there walking the walk as well as talking the talk

Very easy to be overloaded with all the information out there so I'll try to use a testers approach to it. Firstly do some exploratory testing and find out what is out there. Then try to work out which seem to be the best and offer the most so I can then focus my attentions on those areas. Look for places that are active but not just active with with newbies like me asking "New to QA, where do I start ?"

And so the journey from developer to tester begins, a journey that is usually travelled the other way but it could be quite the ride. Will it be too much too soon or can we learn to Embrace Change ? I will try and share any lessons learned here so I can give something back to the testing community

hope we can help

Phil welcome, as Antony says you are not the first to start this journey and hopefully you will not be the last. However you are fairly rare in the fact you are looking to share the experience of this journey and hopefully some lessons from your experiences in context.
Personally I would advise to read the blogs of some of the people named in the blogroll here who are keen to interact and share experiences. On the groups front the yahoo groups for agile testing and software testing are excellent if a bit too busy for me at the moment to do much more then lurk.
I too look forward to hearing more and will share experiences and comments where i feel they may be of use and add value.
Keep on blogging.

That's what we are here for...

[textile]Welcome Phil. You are walking a path now walked by many others before you. If you haven't read it already, take a look at "this developer's collection of resources":http://codebetter.com/blogs/darrell.norton/articles/50337.aspx . Darrell is probably a fair ways ahead of you but at least you know you are not alone. I for one will certainly follow your adventures with interest, so keep on blogging!
