Moving agile: bottom-up and top-down the same time

agile
Great news, I’m going to SCRUM training in a month. What’s interesting about it – that we are a big company with recently written multi-hundred page methodology, based on formal gate process (which clearly state we follow waterfall with option to have iterative waterfall). And still I’m going to get SCRUM Master training from Dr. Jeff Sutherland sponsored by company.
Meanwhile the actual engineering practices include things like continuous integration for a long while. In my project we deliver builds weekly to other teams (internal). We are (unlucky so far) struggling against inability of executive management to recognize how gate process does not fit the way we are doing things.

The best way for this to happen
So what I wanted to say? I’ve red about companies “going” Agile with the only marketing goal. I’ve red individuals (in their blogs) trying to promote agile ideas within their working place. I even red those individuals blaming marketing for crashing their ideals. I don’t! I’m thankful for Agile gaining popularity and as a result recognition among executives. Of course, it is up to us – individuals – to build up agility instead of adopt Agile methods. We must show middle and project management how the agile is supposed to work not vice-versa. Or this will be just-another methodology tome covered by dust in few years.
