A Tester's Letter to Santa

Dear Santa, I'm a software tester.

Since you see me when I'm sleeping and know when I'm awake, you must know that I dream about this stuff when I'm sleeping and obsess about it when I'm awake.

I read on one of your elves' blogs that you finally got a T1 up there to the toy shop so I thought I would send you this wish list, hoping your search engine gets it to you way up on the North Pole, and see if you might be able to bring me at least one of these.

1. Managers who understand different approaches for different projects
As an ancient icon who manages a huge team of identical elves on a manufacturing line, I'm sure you would be Factory School if you had to pick one, but what about that year when the huge snowstorm came? The same old way of doing things didn't work and you had to hire that freak with the red nose to guide your sleigh, remember?

2. Time to do things right
I know this a toughie, maybe you'll have to ask your friend Father Time for a favor. I think I saw him on TV with you once and you guys were pals.

3. Access to the source code
Please Santa, all the other boys and girls have cool little toys called IDEs where they write magical spells in lots of languages. I'm supposed to make sure the spells don't hurt anybody, but how can I when I'm not allowed to see them?

4. A team of testers with diverse skill sets
Remember that same winter when one of your elf factory workers wanted to be dentist? And who would have been tall enough to put the star on your tree if the Abominable Snow Monster hadn't asked for a job as tree star putter-onner?

5. A great Performance Test tool that doesn't cost $20,000 just to get started
I know your most favorite boy Billy (he must be your favorite because he gets the most presents) was working on one. Oh wait, I see Visual Studio Team Edition for Testers under the tree, I guess you made an early delivery. Thanks Santa! I'll check it out!

Maybe other testers have some wishes of their own. Don’t forget to check the comments Santa!

Your friend,
Little Johnny Tester

John, I haven't been keeping a list, but if I had, this would absolutely be on my top 10 blog posts for 2007 list!
