Estimating isn’t just a nuisance task

perspectives | test management tools
This past month, I was a customer to a contractor. I hired someone to complete a house project for me. And I’ve been a contractor for a customer. I was hired to complete a body of testing. In the same month, I bartered testing services for html work with a web designer.

It’s been interesting to experience both sides of the professional table at the same time. The basic task of estimating is the same despite the work being vastly different. I learned that estimating isn’t just a nuisance task to get management off my back. Or to fill a Gantt chart to appease a project manager. It turns out that estimating is an essential task because without good estimating, how can I tell if I’m truly available?

Pass/Fail for run-logs. Is it useful info?

Run-log pass/fail flag is common in T.M. tools such as test director. My studies indicate the most typically definition of pass/fail is: failed if any defect is encountered while execution; it is passed otherwise.
More over I’ve seen publications that suppose failed test case % to be the best indication of product quality. I find such measure even weaker than defect trends that are also attacked as inadequate. For example this approach doesn’t differentiate if a feature is not implemented or there is typo on user screen.
In my projects I use different approach and it gives me a really useful measure. Please be patient and read the whole story backed up with IEEE standard.

Today I decided to boldly go where I have avoided going for the last six years. I finally started querying the Rational TestManager database. Mostly so I don't forget what I did, I thought I would share my attempt with the world.
